Fireworks Attack Guts Drogheda Refugee Centre; Five Injured

Dublin: A devastating fire broke out at a refugee accommodation centre in Drogheda, County Louth, after fireworks were reportedly thrown into the building following Halloween celebrations. The incident caused extensive damage and left five people, including children, injured.

The blaze occurred at around 8:15 p.m. at the George Street facility, which was home to 28 residents, including women and children. Firefighters rescued five people—among them children under the age of 10—from the top floor of the building. All five were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for treatment. Gardaí confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

An incident room has been established at Drogheda Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with camera or CCTV footage from the area to contact them at Drogheda Garda Station (041 987 4200), the confidential helpline (1800 666 111), or any local Garda station.

Leaders Condemn ‘Reprehensible’ Attack

Prime Minister Micheál Martin condemned the attack, describing it as an “appalling act that endangered families, including young children.” He said such actions “have no place in Irish society.”

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called the incident “reprehensible” and confirmed that Gardaí were conducting a full investigation. He added that efforts were underway to secure alternative accommodation for the displaced residents.

Drogheda Labour Councillor Pio Smith said the county council was seeking emergency accommodation for all 28 displaced residents. Labour TD Ged Nash called the attack “a vile and cowardly act”, while Drogheda Mayor Michelle Hall reminded the public that “those living in IPAS centres are human beings who deserve safety and dignity.”

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy criticised attempts to scapegoat asylum seekers for Ireland’s social issues, warning that such rhetoric fuels hate crimes. Social Democrats justice spokesman Gary Gannon urged political leaders to take stronger action to counter hate and intolerance, warning that “more lives will be lost if the government fails to act decisively.”
