First batch of students in Ireland will return to school today; Authorities said strict security measures had been taken
DUBLIN: Students missed 33 working days as schools closed in the third lockdown for more than a month. Days later, the first batch of students arrives at school today, and the next batch will arrive on the 15th of this month. About three and a half lakh children are returning to school today.
All schools are ready to welcome children. The re-opening of schools are planned on a phased basis. Students from junior infants to second graders will be attending classes today.
Teachers over the age of 60 and those who are pregnant have been granted leave to avoid high risk in the wake of COVID-19 situation.
Schools are reopening with heavy security measures. Parents who take their children to school are not allowed to enter the building. It is suggested that all precautions taken when schools re-opened after the first lockdown should also be followed this time.
Parents and staff will not be allowed to interact each other. Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn urged parents not to gather outside after the children were taken to school. The procedures are the same as those adopted for students from last September to December, he said. He also gave instructions, such as frequent hand washing, to ensure proper ventilation by keeping windows and doors open.
Meanwhile, teachers unions have demanded that all teachers be provided with medical grade masks. Currently these are only allowed for teachers who have close contact with students. The INTO pointed out that giving to everyone would be more beneficial.
A recent survey found that 15% of children are behind in their studies, according to INTO General Secretary John Boyle. One-sixth of the school year was lost in the lockdown.
The INTO also demanded the return of special services such as occupational therapy, speech and language therapy. The organisation criticised for not providing such services since March. Teachers are also happy to return to individual teaching.
