Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to Publish Candid Political Memoir in September
Dublin: Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is set to release his autobiography, Speaking My Mind, on September 11, offering a candid account of his personal life and political journey. The memoir will chronicle his experiences in government during a transformative period in Ireland’s recent history, covering pivotal moments such as the economic crisis, Brexit, landmark referendums, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Varadkar, who served as Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin West from 2007 until his resignation in 2024, held ministerial positions across multiple departments before becoming Taoiseach from 2017 to 2020, and again from 2022 until March 2024. His unexpected resignation earlier this year sent ripples through the Irish political landscape. Announcing his decision, Varadkar stated he no longer felt he was the right person for the role and confirmed he would not contest the July 2024 general election. He also remarked that he had never seen himself as a lifelong politician and felt it was time to explore new opportunities.
In a statement about the forthcoming memoir, Varadkar said he has sought to be “as honest as possible”, reflecting on his successes, failures, and regrets during his time in office. The book aims to offer insights into both his personal growth and the behind-the-scenes realities of leading the country through significant challenges.
Following his departure from frontline politics, Varadkar has remained active on the international stage. He spent time in the United States as a ‘Hauser Leader’ and guest lecturer at Harvard University’s Kennedy School Centre for Public Leadership, and later joined the Global Advisory Board of the Penta Group, an international public affairs and communications firm.
In addition to his academic and advisory roles, Varadkar recently took part in an expedition to South Africa alongside former Special Forces soldier Ray Goggins, marking a new chapter in a life now focused on reflection, leadership, and global engagement.
