Four-day week project in Ireland to success…

Dublin: The experimental four-day week project implemented in Ireland has been a success. The research also revealed that out of the 12 companies that participated in the project, the majority of the organisations accepted the project wholeheartedly. There was great acceptance of the four working days in a week. It was also a new experience that both organisations and employees welcomed.

The pilot project was jointly implemented by Four-Day Week Ireland, UCD, and Boston College, with support from the trade union Forsa.

The research also assessed the economic, social, and environmental impacts of a four-day work week on organisations and employees.

According to the study, nine of the twelve companies that took part in the six-month trial were willing to continue with this work schedule. The other three companies said they wanted to keep the scheme going but had no long-term plans. Revenues increased for all six firms during this period, and energy consumption decreased in two companies, according to the research.

This was the first work-time trial in Ireland. Dr. Orla Kelly of the University of Dublin compiled the research findings.

All the employees are happy… and the companies

According to the researchers, company executives were pleased with productivity and overall performance. The positive rating of all these companies reached an average of 9.2. The results showed that 100% of employees preferred a shorter work schedule. There was improvement in their lives and well-being. Work-family conflict, stress, and fatigue are all significantly reduced. The study also discovered that bedtime increased.

UCD’s Dr. Orla Kelly said: “Employees are using their days off for life management.” “The research highlights the growing need for a balanced work-life schedule,” said FORSA General Secretary Kevin Callinan.

One of the companies involved in the trial, Codema, stated that the project improved employee well-being and job satisfaction. Rent a Recruiter said the project had been successful in recruiting and retaining employees.
