Four-Week Hosepipe Ban Introduced in Parts of Ireland Amid Growing Water Shortages
Dublin – A hosepipe ban has been introduced across several counties in Ireland for a period of four weeks in response to increasing water shortages. The ban, effective until June 16, 2025, applies to Mullingar (Co. Westmeath), Milford (Co. Donegal), and the Kells-Oldcastle area (Co. Meath).
The water authority has issued a Water Conservation Order urging residents and businesses in these regions to limit water usage to essential purposes only. As part of the restrictions:
- Hosepipes may not be used for watering gardens, recreational parks, sports grounds, or for washing vehicles and trailers.
- Commercial car wash operations are also prohibited from using water for non-essential purposes, such as filling ponds or ornamental lakes.
- Residents are encouraged to take shorter showers and avoid bathing unless absolutely necessary.
The restrictions are aimed at preserving water for households, businesses, and critical services, as continued dry weather and increased demand place mounting pressure on local water supplies.
The water authority emphasised the importance of public cooperation and conscious water conservation, encouraging individuals to:
- Check outdoor taps and plumbing for leaks.
- Report leaks on public water networks to the Leak Helpline at 1800 278 278.
Authorities reiterated that proactive conservation measures are essential to ensure sufficient water supply through the ongoing period of dry conditions.
