Garda Collaborates with International Agencies to Target Islamist Terrorists in Ireland

Dublin: Gardaí, in collaboration with international agencies, have intensified efforts to capture Islamist terrorists believed to be operating within Ireland. Authorities have uncovered that numerous individuals from Asian countries who entered the country as students are involved in separatist activities and radical religious propaganda, with operations reportedly centred in Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford.

In a major anti-terror operation yesterday, Gardaí seized over €100,000 in various currencies, suspected to be linked to large-scale fundraising for terrorist activities. Alongside the funds, digital devices and documentation were also recovered. These are currently under review by the Garda Anti-Terror Unit, which hopes to gather crucial intelligence once the materials, including mobile phones, are thoroughly examined.

This operation forms part of a broader international crackdown involving cooperation between several countries and Europol, the European Union’s police agency. While no arrests have been made as of yet, the investigation is ongoing.

Three Houses Raided in Money Laundering Probe

Last Friday, a coordinated raid led by the Garda Special Detective Unit (SDU) targeted three residences in the south and east of Ireland. Officers from the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) participated in the operation, which sought evidence of money laundering activities. It is believed that non-Irish nationals were residing in these properties, and GNIB has taken the lead in the investigation.

Massive Fundraising for Islamic Terrorism Uncovered

The Garda Security Service had previously flagged an increase in investigations related to terrorist financing, particularly concerning Islamist fundraising. In response to this rising threat, the SDU formed a special unit six years ago to focus on terror financing cases. The unit now handles an average of 60 cases annually, and authorities have noted significant amounts of money raised in recent years.

Recent intelligence suggests that the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a network affiliated with the original Islamic State based in Syria, has been actively raising funds to support the group’s resurgence. Investigators believe part of the fundraising efforts included collecting money for zakat (charitable donations) under the guise of aiding poor Muslims in India during the festival of sacrifice.
