Castlebar: A Garda-led inter-agency search operation in the Castlebar, Westport, Ballintuber, and Claremorris areas resulted in the seizure of counterfeit Apple products valued at €160,000. The operation involved inspections of multiple business establishments, leading to the confiscation of approximately 800 fake devices. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far.

The search was part of a targeted effort to combat intellectual property (IP) crimes in the region. The operation was a joint effort involving the Mayo/Roscommon/Longford Crime Unit, Mayo South Community Engagement, the Garda National Immigration Bureau, and the Intellectual Property Crime Investigation Unit of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI). Additional support was provided by Revenue Customs, the Workplace Relations Commission, and the Social Welfare Special Investigations Unit (SUI).

Intellectual property crimes are estimated to cost the Irish economy over €85 billion annually. A Garda spokesperson emphasised that these crimes pose significant risks to public health, safety, and occupational security.
