Garda uniforms updated, giving the force a new look

DUBLIN: Gardai, sergeants and inspectors in Ireland started wearing new uniforms from Monday. This is only the third time in An Garda Sochána’s 100-year history that the Garda uniforms have been formally upgraded.

The uniform change follows a key recommendation outlined in the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland Report, ‘A Police Service For Our Future’.

Over 13,000 will wear polo shirts, two-tone soft shell and waterproof jackets, and new ‘operational trousers’ which have pockets. For the first time, the Garda crest will be clearly badged on the uniform.

Garda will no longer wear shirts and ties, except for formal occasions, but will continue to wear the Garda peaked cap. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said the old uniforms will be disposed of through a tender process.

An Garda Sochána previously updated its uniform policy to let Sikhs to wear a Turban, Kufi, Topi, Kippah, or Hijab.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said the number of Gardai and supporting staff would need to be reviewed in light of the increasing demands on the force. The commissioner was speaking at the uniform launch. He said the recruitment process to increase the number of gardaí to 15,000 is now underway and will be completed by January.
