Gardai warn of fraud calls from fraudsters posing as gardai
DUBLIN: Gardai are the ones who warn people about phone scams, but what if the calls come from the ‘Garda station’ itself? Yes, the latest warning from the An Garda Síochána is that they have received several reports of people receiving phone calls from fraudsters who claim to be members of garda. The gardai warn the public to be wary of such fraudulent calls that appear to come from a real garda station.
The scam, which involves the phone numbers of garda stations in Wexford, Dublin, and Donegal, is reported to be taking place across the country. Many Indians across the country have received such fake calls in recent days, and some have even fallen victim to them.
Fraudsters operate in the following manner:
The phone number used to make the call appears to be that of a genuine garda station. Once the call is answered, the receiver will hear a pre-recorded or automated message in which they will be asked to choose an option. Following that, the call will be routed to someone posing a garda.
Gardai says fraudsters will look for victims’ personal information or tell them that their details have been involved or linked to a crime. A follow-up contact will be made to the victim by another fraudster in attempt to gather additional information, supposedly on behalf of An Garda Sochána.
What does gardai say?
“An Garda Síochána will never make contact with members of the public in this fashion. Most members of the public realise these type of calls are not legitimate and do not engage with the scammers,” gardaí said in a statement.
“Whilst the scammers may change their stories and methods, their goal is always the same – they want to access your sensitive information and get their hands on your money.”
Gardai warns anyone who receives a fake phone call not to engage with the caller. Gardai further advised people not to follow the instructions of fraudsters or to press a number on the phone screen or keyboard. People are also advised not to share any personal information or send money.
