Gardaí will have more powers….. vehicle will be impounded in real time & driving bans will be imposed

Dublin: The Irish Parliament has given preliminary approval to a bill that would give the Garda more powers to conduct vehicle inspections.

The new Road Traffic Act includes provisions that allow gardai to instantly check for valid insurance coverage at roadside checks.

If drivers are found driving without insurance, the new bill gives garda the authority to impound their vehicles. The bill also calls for the imposition of penalty points, a driving ban for an appropriate period of time, and heavy fines.

The Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) and road safety campaign groups such as Park have described the new regulations as ‘a game changer’. Insurers have warned that it is a blow to those who cause loss and misery to the taxpayer and accident victims with uninsured vehicles.

Ireland has the second-highest number of uninsured drivers in the EU, behind Greece.

In 2022, it is estimated that there is more than 188,000 vehicles on Ireland’s roads without valid insurance, equivalent to one in every 12 private vehicles.
