Google to cut 240 jobs from operation in Ireland

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, will cut 240 jobs from its operations in Ireland as part of a global staff reduction.

According to a person familiar with the situation and an email to employees seen by Bloomberg News, the business is eliminating 85 sales positions, 80 engineering and technology positions, and 75 support function roles.

The job cuts reflect a 4.3% fall in Google’s 5,500-strong Irish workforce, which is smaller than the company’s overall 6% headcount reduction.

According to the email, a collective consultation will begin on February 23.

It is estimated that around 75 support function roles would be impacted, including those in human operations and finance. “Employee representatives will get further specifics on individual business sector proposals during the consultation process.”

Google alerted Enterprise Minister Simon Coveney of possible collective redundancies on Wednesday morning, according to an emailed statement from the Department of Enterprise.

Labour Party Leader Ivana Bacik called the employment losses “significant,” despite the fact that they are less severe than the amount seen throughout Google’s global operations.  Employees and local public representatives have been informed, she said.
