Government Allocates Over €11 Million in Direct Exchequer Support for Regional Airports

The Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025 will provide more than €11 million in direct Exchequer support to Donegal, Kerry, Ireland West (Knock), and Shannon airports. Aimed at bolstering safety and security operations such as air traffic control, fire services, and security, the funding ensures regulatory compliance in these critical areas.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers, announced the allocations, with Donegal Airport receiving €0.721 million, Kerry securing €1.423 million, Ireland West receiving €1.869 million, and Shannon Airport obtaining €7.172 million. This funding marks a 4.5% increase from the previous year and supplements the €16.63 million in capital support announced earlier.

The total funding of €28 million for Irish regional airports in 2023 highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to the sector, supporting economic development, foreign direct investment, tourism, and international connections. Minister Chambers emphasised the importance of Ireland’s global connectivity and noted a 9% increase in overall passenger traffic at regional airports up to October 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

The mid-term review of the Regional Airports Programme, focusing on balanced regional development and enhancing international connectivity, is nearing completion. Mary Considine, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, expressed gratitude for Shannon Airport’s inclusion in the programme, emphasising its pivotal role in supporting regional growth and the government’s aim for balanced regional development.
