Government Fails to Address Pay Rise for Ireland’s Clinical Specialist Nurses

Dublin: The government has failed to grant Ireland’s Clinical Specialist Nurses (CNSs) the pay rise they deserve, leaving hundreds of nurses across various disciplines—from cancer care to neurology and community care—undercompensated.

Despite performing the same duties as nurse managers, specialist nurses in hospitals continue to be paid less. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has warned of potential strike action if pay parity is not extended to all affected grades.

In response, the Department of Public Expenditure has authorised the Department of Health to increase CNS salaries by €4,000 per year. However, no official government announcement has been made yet.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) category was established in 2019 to ensure salary parity with nurse managers. Despite this, the pay scale has not been adjusted since a strike in 2019. The INMO highlighted this discrepancy to the government last April, and Health Minister Stephen Donnelly assured that the issue would be resolved soon.

While regional meetings have been held to gather feedback from the affected nurses, no concrete action has been taken, leading to growing frustration among the nursing community.
