Government Introduces Special Travel Arrangement for IRP Renewal Applicants Over Christmas Period

Dublin: The Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has announced temporary measures to assist non-EEA residents planning Christmas travel amid ongoing delays in processing Irish Residence Permit (IRP) renewals.

Under the new arrangement, individuals who apply to renew their IRP card before its expiry date will be permitted to travel using their recently expired card between 8 December 2025 and 31 January 2026. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted travel during the holiday period, as IRP cards typically take an additional two weeks to arrive by post after renewal is completed.

To use this facility, travellers must download and print the official Travel Confirmation Notice and present it to immigration authorities and airlines, along with proof of their renewal application, including the email confirmation showing the application date.

The Department of Justice has notified all airlines and foreign missions of the temporary policy. However, officials advised that travellers must still comply with all other immigration requirements, including visa rules when transiting through third countries. The Minister for Justice reaffirmed that non-EEA nationals residing in Ireland who have submitted renewal applications and wish to travel abroad over Christmas can do so without difficulty using their recently expired IRP card under this special arrangement.
