Harassment of nurses and healthcare workers: a parliamentary committee launches an investigation

Dublin: A parliamentary committee has decided to conduct an inquiry after nurses and unions alleged harassment from senior officials in the Health Service Executive. The media had reported on various programmes that top Health Service Executive officials were harassing nurses and health workers.

Parliament called for an inquiry into the matter after a television show called Launch Time Live revealed the ongoing abuses at the HSE. As part of the investigation, Parliament held a special meeting yesterday morning to discuss health workers’ safety, health, and lives.

Sinn Fein Health Spokesperson David Cullinane presided over the meeting. The experiences of nurses and other health workers were reported to the management, but there was no solution. INMO Industrial Director Albert Murphy told the committee that he had yet to expect a definitive solution to the problems from the HSE.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha stated that the HSE had failed miserably in ensuring the safety and well-being of their employees. She went on to say that anyone who believes they are being bullied at work should contact their trade union, and that we will make sure their concerns are addressed properly.

Lack of cultural integration.

As per Dr. Clive Kilgallen, president of the Irish Medical Organisation, harassment is not just a problem for nurses. According to a recent IMO survey, a quarter of female doctors and a fifth of men experience workplace harassment.

Duty of care.

Meanwhile, Head of Health and Welfare Ashley stated that the Health Service Executive needed to do more in terms of care. She stated that her union members have had negative experiences with filing grievances at work. She demanded that there be a policy to take care of the complainants rather than try to isolate them.
