Dublin: Health officials are warning of a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in Ireland, fuelled by the fast-spreading XFG “Stratus” variant, which now accounts for 87.5% of confirmed cases, up from 33% just six weeks ago.
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) confirmed 461 new cases nationwide last week. Dublin recorded the highest number with 108 cases, followed by Cork (47), Limerick (34), Galway (33), and Tipperary (29).
New Symptoms Emerging
Doctors report that hoarseness or a raspy voice may be an early sign of infection, often appearing before classic symptoms. Other symptoms remain wide-ranging, from fever, cough, and fatigue to nausea, dizziness, skin rashes, and loss of appetite.
The World Health Organisation has listed Stratus as a “variant under monitoring”, noting its rapid spread. The HSE is urging the public to stay home if symptomatic and avoid contact with vulnerable individuals until 48 hours after recovery.
The surge coincides with mass events, including the Oasis reunion concerts at Croke Park, where over 160,000 fans attended, raising concerns of increased transmission.
