Heightened Garda Presence as Protests Continue in Citywest Following Assault Case

Dublin: Protests in the Saggart and Citywest areas of Dublin continued for a fourth consecutive day following the alleged sexual assault of a young girl by a refugee. A large Garda operation remains in place to maintain order, with heightened security around the Citywest Accommodation Centre.

A protest march was held near the accommodation centre on Wednesday evening but concluded without violence, in contrast to earlier demonstrations that had turned chaotic. However, Gardaí confirmed that a resident of the centre was assaulted on Tuesday evening, leading to the arrest of a young refugee in connection with the incident.

Violence erupted earlier in the week during a major protest involving around 2,000 people. Gardaí reported that four officers were injured, and 15 scooters and e-bikes were seized in subsequent raids. More than 300 Gardaí have been deployed to the area, including armed units, public order divisions, and mounted and dog teams. Water cannons and air support were also placed on standby to prevent further escalation.

Assistant Commissioner Cliona Richardson said that many of those involved in the unrest were not local residents but individuals who had travelled from other parts of Ireland and even from abroad. She appealed for calm and urged people not to participate in unlawful gatherings.

Chief Superintendent Michael McNulty confirmed that Garda operations would continue around Citywest throughout the coming week. He noted that social media had played a significant role in spreading misinformation and inciting unrest.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the violence, stressing that while citizens have the right to protest and express political dissent, they do not have the right to endanger public safety or attack Garda members. The minister also called on social media platforms to take stronger action against the online promotion of violence, reminding them of their responsibility to prevent the facilitation of criminal activity.
