HSE Chief Suggests Recruitment Ban Will Remain in Place

Dublin: Bernard Gloster, the head of the Health Service Executive (HSE), has stood firm on maintaining the recruitment ban despite mounting concerns over staff shortages in the health sector. Addressing the annual conference of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) in Killarney, Gloster emphasised the necessity of maximising existing resources rather than lifting the ban.

Gloster pointed to the current high levels of funding and staffing within hospitals, asserting that the sector is operating with more personnel than ever before. He urged healthcare professionals to optimise their services within the existing framework, emphasising the need for efficiency and improved care delivery.

Acknowledging the pressures facing the acute hospital system, Gloster advocated for management reforms to alleviate strains and enhance performance. He stressed the importance of expediting decision-making processes and cultivating a new service-oriented culture to bolster public trust.

Despite calls from IMO representatives and other organisations, including the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), for the reversal of the recruitment ban, the Health Department maintains its stance. While some health workers who completed the recruitment process earlier have been appointed, the ban remains in place amid ongoing staff shortages.
