India’s all-time best Olympics! Neeraj Chopra wins gold for India in javelin throw

TOKYO: India’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra scripted history on Saturday by winning gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The 23-year-old claimed India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics with his 87.58m throw in the javelin final. Neeraj became the only second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal after shooter Abhinav Bindra.

Neeraj threw the javelin 87.03m on his first attempt and 87.58m on his second. His next throws had less range than the previous ones, and his fourth and fifth attempts were disqualified. However his second throw was far superior to the others and was sufficient to earn gold for India. Second and third place went to Czech Republic players.

“This is our first Olympic medal for a very long time, and in athletics it is the first time we have gold, so it’s a proud moment for me and my country,” Neeraj said after winning the historic gold.

With Neeraj Chopra’s medal haul, the Tokyo Olympics became India’s highest medal-winning Olympics. India has surpassed the record of six medals won at the 2012 London Olympics.

It was India’s first gold medal and its seventh overall in the Tokyo Olympics. With just one day to go before the end of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, this is India’s second medal on Saturday. Neeraj’s gold medal follows Bajrang Poonia’s bronze in wrestling.

Neeraj to get Rs 6 crore and a XUV 700

The Haryana government has announced a cash reward of Rs 6 crore for Neeraj Chopra for his historic achievement. Meanwhile, Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group, will gift the superstar a brand new XUV 700 when he returns to India.
