DUBLIN: Government of India’s intervention in the approval of the Indian-made Covishield vaccine has paid off. The Covishield COVID-19 vaccine, manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII), has been approved in eight European Union countries (including Ireland) and Switzerland.
Ireland, Germany, Austria, Iceland, Spain, Greece and Slovenia all confirmed their approval of the Covishield vaccine on Thursday. Estonia has confirmed that it will accept all vaccines authorised by the Indian Government.
India on Wednesday called on EU member states to allow Indians who have been vaccinated with the Covishield or Covaxin vaccines to travel to Europe under the EUs ‘green passport’ system.
The Central Government had stated that if Indian vaccines were not approved, mandatory quarantine would be imposed on those coming to India from EU countries. European countries agreed to approve the Covishield vaccine after the Indian government took a stand.
Government sources said the Central Government has also requested EU member states to accept the vaccination certificate issued through the CoWIN portal.
