India’s rule to fascism? What does Kejriwal’s arrest indicate?

Delhi: The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal amidst allegations related to the 2021–22 Delhi liquor policy has stirred significant controversy. Seen by some as a politically motivated move by the BJP, this incident has sparked concerns about the state of democracy in India.

The Enforcement Directorate’s arrest of Kejriwal, following the earlier arrest of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the same case, centres on accusations of granting undue benefits to liquor licensees. The FIR alleges that Sisodia and other officials acted without proper authorization in implementing decisions related to the excise policy.

Despite the withdrawal of the controversial liquor policy, the BJP has persisted in pursuing legal action, portraying it as a bid to root out corruption. However, critics argue that the BJP’s focus on this relatively minor case is a thinly veiled attempt to undermine Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The controversy surrounding the liquor policy and subsequent arrests underscores deeper political tensions between the BJP and AAP. While the BJP accuses the AAP of financial irregularities, voices from the opposition and civil society decry what they perceive as an erosion of democratic values and an abuse of state power.

Furthermore, the timing of Kejriwal’s arrest, amid ongoing elections, has raised suspicions of political manipulation. Critics argue that the BJP’s actions aim to stifle opposition voices and consolidate power rather than genuinely combatting corruption.

In this context, Kejriwal’s supporters see him as a symbol of resistance against what they perceive as creeping authoritarianism and corporate influence in Indian politics. His insistence on defending himself in court reflects a commitment to upholding democratic principles and fighting against what he views as unjust persecution.

Ultimately, the fallout from these events highlights the broader struggle for the soul of Indian democracy, where competing visions of governance and accountability collide amidst a backdrop of political intrigue and power plays.
