A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the Indonesian capital Jakarta for several seconds on Monday, according to the Meteorology and Geophysics Office (BMKG).
The epicentre was on land near Cianjur, West Java, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), according to BMKG, who added that there was no risk of a tsunami.
Some workers escaped workplaces in Jakarta’s core business area, while others described feeling buildings shake and seeing furniture move, according to Reuters witnesses.
Residents of Cianjur, the hardest-hit area, brought the lifeless bodies to Sayang hospital on motorcycles and pickup trucks as the number of people with wounds rose. Doctors were unable to operate on the wounded immediately due to power disruptions.
According to the AFP report, numerous individuals arrived at another hospital covered in blood, and some were looking for lost relatives. The governor stated that several individuals had head and foot injuries that required them to be stitched back together.
Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressed shock at the devastation in Indonesia.
