The Semeru volcano in Indonesia erupted on Sunday, forcing officials to evacuate almost 2,000 people. Videos of the eruption were extensively shared on social media, as the country’s Core for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) issued the area’s highest warning level and warned inhabitants not to come within 8 kilometres of Semeru’s eruption centre.
According to Reuters, there were no initial reports of injuries from the eruption, and Indonesia’s transportation ministry indicated there would be no disruption to air travel.
As per Reuters, Mount Semeru is the tallest mountain on Java island and erupted last year, killing more than 50 people.
