International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – December 2, 2022

Every year on December 2, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed. On this day in 1949, the United Nations General Assembly passed the Convention for the Suppression of Human Trafficking and the Exploitation of Others’ Prostitution. This day is devoted to the abolition of modern forms of slavery such as sexual exploitation, human trafficking, the most cruel types of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of youngsters for the armed forces.

It aims to raise awareness and strengthen worldwide efforts to address the evil of modern slavery. Governments, organisations, and individuals are urged to use this day to expressly denounce the crimes of modern-day slavery that still exist across the world.

HOW TO OBSERVE THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY. Just a small step!

  1. Become a more mindful buyer. One way to observe International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and effect serious change is to commit to exclusively purchasing items branded “fair trade,” which indicate that they are made ethically.
  2. Commit to ethical labor sourcing.
  3. Stop oppressing other people. Examine yourself; you may be oppressing someone or some individuals in some way.
