Dublin: Recent reports highlight a growing trend of individuals being terminated from their employment without justification in Ireland. Despite legal provisions strictly regulating dismissals, some organisations are allegedly bypassing these requirements, leaving employees without even a day’s notice.
Irish labor laws dictate that employees can only be dismissed after providing a minimum of one week’s prior written notice. The specifics of the notice period vary depending on the duration of an individual’s tenure with the organization. Regrettably, a lack of awareness about these regulations often leaves employees vulnerable to sudden terminations without proper notice. In the past six months, approximately 20 employees across various regions in Ireland have reportedly faced dismissal without any stated reasons.
The issue appears more prevalent in workplaces such as private shops and nursing homes, where forced resignations disproportionately affect immigrant workers. Many of these individuals, often unable to connect with trade unions, find themselves in precarious situations. However, those who choose to challenge such dismissals and seek recourse have legal avenues available to them.
The plight of foreign workers, who invest significant resources to relocate, is disheartening, as they are compelled to resign without receiving a satisfactory explanation. In instances where employees are asked to resign without cause, it is within their rights to demand proper legal notice from their employers.
