Ireland Grapples with Aftermath of Storm Jocelyn Following Cyclone Isha

Dublin: Ireland experienced further disruption as Storm Jocelyn, following closely on the heels of Cyclone Isha, wreaked havoc across the region. The rapid succession of these storms brought life to a partial standstill, with Storm Jocelyn marked by an Orange Alert, especially impacting Galway, Mayo, and Donegal.

Coastal areas bore the brunt of Storm Jocelyn, with high waves causing distress to commuters and local residents. An Orange Wind Alert was in effect for specific regions, with Donegal expected to see improvements by Wednesday morning. The entire country remained under a Yellow Wind Alert until early Wednesday.

The storm inflicted considerable damage, particularly disrupting power supply to hundreds of thousands of families and institutions. Fallen trees and power lines compounded travel difficulties and safety concerns. While crews worked diligently to restore power, thousands remained without electricity.

ESB Networks reported progress in power restoration, with 221,000 homes, farms, and businesses regaining power. However, 38,000 consumers still awaited restoration, with ESB anticipating full recovery by the week’s end.

Adverse weather conditions led to flight disruptions, with several flights from Dublin Airport diverted and canceled. Cork Airport faced similar challenges, cancelling and diverting flights. Bus services on various routes were also impacted.

In Northern Ireland, a Yellow Wind Warning persisted for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry until Wednesday afternoon, anticipating strong winds. Titanic Belfast, a renowned visitor centre, remained closed due to damages incurred during Storm Isha and the subsequent closure prompted by Storm Jocelyn. The facility, having suffered roof damage earlier, made the decision to prioritise safety amid the ongoing adverse weather conditions. All pre-booked visitors have been refunded as the region collectively works towards recovery.
