“Ireland Launches Third National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking”

Dublin: Ireland witnesses the unveiling of the third National Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Human Trafficking, a crucial initiative aimed at eradicating human trafficking and fostering the development of resilient and secure communities.

Collaborating across various government departments, the Gardaí, Tusla, and the HSE, the comprehensive action plan addresses the multifaceted challenge of human trafficking. Its objectives encompass the protection and repatriation of trafficking victims, the implementation of appropriate penalties for perpetrators, and the establishment of effective anti-trafficking screening measures upon entry into the country.

To bolster these efforts, training programmes will be instituted for frontline staff in sectors such as hospitality, aviation, and shipping, in addition to NGOs. The plan also includes provisions for temporary healthcare and other support for illegal arrivals.

As human trafficking incidents, particularly those based on religion and sexual exploitation, have surged in Ireland, the plan underscores the importance of preventing, detecting, and prosecuting criminals involved in these activities. The Department of Justice can consider extensions for legally resident individuals bringing their next of kin if they face challenges returning home for valid reasons, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.
