Ireland Must Be Proactive Amid Global Uncertainty, Says Prime Minister Micheál Martin
Dublin: Ireland cannot afford to be a passive observer in today’s rapidly changing global political landscape, Prime Minister Micheál Martin has stated. Emphasising the need for swift and decisive action, he asserted that Ireland will respond dynamically to international developments.
The Prime Minister outlined Ireland’s position during his address at The Irish Times Business Awards at Mansion House, Dublin. His remarks come ahead of his upcoming visit to the United States, where he is set to meet President Donald Trump at the White House next month.
Europe’s Need for Greater Self-Sufficiency
Prime Minister Martin stressed the importance of Europe enhancing its defence and security capabilities, underscoring the necessity for all EU member states to increase investment in these areas.
“Europe must become more self-reliant in terms of security and defence—this is undeniable. Protecting the economic integrity and basic security of the European Union is our collective responsibility. Ireland, too, will contribute, even if it starts from a relatively low base,” he said.
Additionally, Martin reaffirmed Ireland’s commitment to cooperating with economic mechanisms implemented within the European Union, ensuring its economic infrastructure remains resilient.
Strengthening US-Ireland Relations
Highlighting the robust economic ties between Ireland and the United States, Martin noted that Ireland is among the top six investors in the US, employing approximately 115,000 people across various industries.
“Ireland serves as a crucial bridge to European markets for American multinationals. Our economic relationship with the US predates the formation of the country itself, and it will continue to flourish across business, culture, and diplomacy,” he stated.
Martin reaffirmed Ireland’s unwavering commitment to transatlantic cooperation, emphasising that strong diplomatic and economic ties will remain a priority.
A Broader Perspective on Immigration
The prime minister also addressed global conflicts and the refugee crisis, noting that recent wars—particularly in the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine—have resulted in significant humanitarian crises.
“The number of young lives lost in these wars is staggering. Yet, there is little discussion about Sudan, where over 12 million people have been displaced. It is crucial to consider the refugee crisis in this broader context,” he remarked.
Advancing the EU Single Market & Free Trade
Calling for a more integrated and efficient European Single Market, Martin urged the EU to expedite agreements on the Capital Markets Union and the Banking Union, both of which have been under negotiation for years.
“The EU must act swiftly to finalise these agreements and strengthen financial cooperation. Ireland is prepared to collaborate with like-minded nations to advance financial services within the bloc,” he said.
Furthermore, Martin emphasised that Europe must bolster itself not just in economic defence but in all areas of global trade.
“Strengthening the European Union is essential. To achieve this, we must advocate for free trade and ensure that every member state champions open markets. Ireland’s prosperity is built on our status as a small, open economy, and continued economic growth depends on maintaining this approach,” he concluded.
