DUBLIN: The Department of Social Security has announced that it will set up special mechanisms to process pending applications for PPS numbers. Approximately 5,000 applications are still pending. Additional processes will be put in place to manage these applications, according to the department.
The government’s move comes amid widespread criticism that delays in processing applications have left many foreign nationals who need a PPS number to work in trouble. Meanwhile, social media also criticised the non-decision on the PPSN application.
There was a situation where many people lost their jobs because they did not receive any information about it despite applying. In Ireland, a PPS number is required in order to receive full pay. It is required for many jobs. The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that additional staff have been assigned to deal with the backlog of PPSN applications.
According to the department, processing applications in Dublin and Cork takes four to five weeks on average. The department also stated that it would contact the representatives of the employers to speed up the process.
As of the end of December, there were 4,900 applications pending. According to the spokesperson, further details and information from the applicants are awaited for the 1,500 applications. The department also explained that incomplete applications also affected the processing time.
