Ireland Postpones Ceremony for Incoming Iranian Ambassador Amid Unrest

Dublin: The Irish Government has postponed the formal accreditation ceremony for Iran’s incoming ambassador due to escalating unrest and violence in Iran.

Ambassador-designate Eshagh Al-Habib was scheduled to present his credentials on Tuesday, a requirement before officially assuming duties. The Department of Foreign Affairs notified Tehran that the delay was prompted by widespread protests and reports of civilian deaths, alongside ongoing internet restrictions in Iran.

Despite the decision, two other envoys — Japan’s Miyagawa Manabu and Pakistan’s Mariam Aftab — were formally received by President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Ambassadors may only take up official functions once welcomed by the President in the State Reception Room.

The government’s stance was supported by opposition parties, including Sinn Féin, the Green Party, Labour, and the Social Democrats, all of whom endorsed the decision in light of the situation in Iran.
