Ireland Sees Significant Increase in Exports, Reports Central Statistics Office

DUBLIN: Ireland’s exports have experienced a substantial rise, according to a recent report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Over the past five months, exports have surged by 10%, totaling €91 billion. Conversely, imports have declined by 10% during the same period.

The CSO attributes these changes primarily to the trade of chemicals and related products. Compared to the same period last year, the export value of these products increased by €5.5 billion from January to May, while their import value decreased by €4.4 billion.

Seasonal goods exports experienced an 11% decline in May, dropping to €17.146 million compared to April. Imports of these goods also fell by 5%, amounting to €10.065 billion. Consequently, the trade surplus for seasonal goods decreased by 18%, reaching €7.081 billion.

Leading Export Sectors: Foodstuffs and Live Animals

The CSO report highlights that food and live animals are the leading segments of Ireland’s exports, with a value of €370 million. Machinery and transport equipment follow in second place, contributing €297 million.

Key Import Sectors: Mineral Fuels and Lubricants

On the import side, mineral fuels, lubricants, and related products top the list with an import value of €350 million. Chemicals and related products follow closely at €257 million, with machinery and transport equipment imports totaling €253 million.

Major Export Destinations: EU and the United States

In May, 39% (€7.068 billion) of Ireland’s total merchandise exports were directed to EU countries. The Netherlands received €2.133 billion, Germany €1.707 billion, and Belgium €935 million. The United States is the second-largest destination for Irish exports outside the EU, accounting for 31% of exports valued at €5.622 billion.
