Ireland Signals Stricter Asylum Measures in Response to UK Policy Shift

Dublin: Ireland is preparing to tighten its asylum policies following recent reforms announced in the United Kingdom, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has indicated. His remarks come after the UK Home Secretary unveiled plans aimed at making Britain less attractive to asylum seekers.

Minister O’Callaghan confirmed that Ireland will publish a new bill later this year to reform its asylum system, noting that the legislation will incorporate changes prompted by the UK’s updated approach. He emphasised that Ireland will not allow a situation in which the country becomes a more appealing destination for refugees than the UK.

“The UK’s proposals will be examined closely, and after consultation with colleagues, we will take the necessary steps,” the minister said. He highlighted that the UK’s new measures are likely to influence refugee movements between the two countries.

A key aspect of the UK reform is the removal of the automatic right to family reunification for refugees under core protection. Minister O’Callaghan noted that Ireland had already initiated a review of its own family reunification laws prior to the UK announcement. He confirmed that updated proposals will be brought before the Cabinet in the near future.
