Ireland’s ‘drunkards’ are reluctant to admit and disclose drinking habits, research finds

Dublin: People in Ireland are reluctant to admit and disclose their drinking habits, according to the latest research by the Health Research Board. According to the study, two-thirds of regular drinkers are unaware that they are drinking excessively, putting their health at risk. This ‘lack of exposure’ is convincing in research conducted by researchers who examined the drinking patterns of more than 7,000 individuals.

Even heavy drinkers do not admit to binge eating, with more than a third claiming to drink only moderately. However, the figures from such surveys do not correspond to the country’s alcohol sales. This is the issue. According to HRB research, there is a tendency to underestimate or misrepresent the amount of alcohol consumed.

Research shows that women are more likely to deny their drinking habits. Only one in every ten women admits to binge drinking, while one in every five men discloses this. There is a drinking culture in Ireland. Binge drinking is more normalized than in other countries. However, HRB research officer Deirdre Mongan stated that the study found that awareness of harmful patterns of drinking was low.

Dr. Mongan said many people did not realise they were drinking at a dangerous level. In this regard, extensive awareness and intervention are needed. Mongan stated. People who are older and less educated are less likely to be aware of the dangers of drinking. At the same time, he says, there is a group of young alcoholics who are aware of dangerous drinking practices.
