Ireland’s government intends to tighten restrictions on illegal immigrants

Dublin: The influx of illegal immigrants into Ireland is a problem. The government intends to tighten restrictions in order to prevent illegal immigration. Leo Varadkar, the Prime Minister, has hinted at this. The Prime Minister also stated that they are debating how the restrictions should be implemented.

Protests against refugees have been going on in Ballymoon for a few days now. It was widely criticised. Varadkar’s remarks were made in this context. Simon Harris, the Justice Minister, had also condemned it.

The number of applicants for international protection has increased to more than 14,000 in 2022, from a peak of 4,000 in previous years. Refugees from various countries, including Ukraine, are putting a significant strain on the system. The most serious issue is one of accommodation. Aside from that, the protests from here are forcing the government to reconsider refugee admission.

According to figures from the Department of Justice, 280 illegal immigrants had been deported as of October 21, 2022. However, the Prime Minister stated that the processing of refugee applications must be accelerated. Orders to deport the ineligible should be issued as soon as possible. This will go a long way toward preserving the international protection system.

In addition to ensuring protection for genuine refugees, appropriate decisions must be made with respect for others. The Prime Minister stated that these issues were discussed at the Cabinet meeting. The prime minister told that the issue would be looked into within the next two weeks.

People arriving in Ireland from outside the EU currently require a visa, but those who fear persecution on the basis of race, religion, nationality, or other factors should be granted international protection. Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has acknowledged that ending direct provision in 2024 will be extremely difficult. Therefore, the Prime Minister stated that it is necessary to change the border controls.
