Cork: Stephy Ouseph, aged 35, passed away on June 21 at Cork University Maternity Hospital following childbirth. Funeral services will be held on Thursday evening, June 27, in Tralee, County Kerry.
The initial part of the service will commence at 5 p.m. at McGelligott’s Funeral Home, Tralee (Aircode: V92 Y4A3). The service will be officiated by Fr. Matthew K. Mathew, the Indian Orthodox Vicar of Cork.
Following the service, Stephy body will be available for public viewing from 6 to 8 p.m., allowing colleagues, friends, and the public to pay their last respects.
Arrangements for the funeral are being led by the Kerry Indian Association and the management of Kerry General Hospital, along with the congregation. Stephy, who was a nurse at Kerry General Hospital, resided in Abbeyfeale, Limerick, with her husband Baiju Scaria, and their son. The family wishes to transport her body to India for burial, and preparations for this are underway.
The Irish community and the Irish Indian community have actively supported a fundraising campaign to cover Stephy’s funeral expenses and support her family. As of Monday evening, €70,000 had been raised.
A hospital spokesperson stated that the coroner has been notified and an external review of the caesarean death will be conducted as mandated by Irish law. The hospital management extended its condolences to Stephy’s family over this tragic incident.
According to the Confidential Maternal Death Inquiry in Ireland, there were 24 caesarean-related deaths in Ireland between 2019 and 2021.
