Irish Navy recruitment to take place in Dublin today; urgent hiring of 200 new sailors

DUBLIN: A golden opportunity in Dublin today for job seekers in the Irish Navy! If you are an Irish citizen or someone who is eligible to live and work in Ireland, visit the pop-up recruitment centre in Dublin Docklands today (Saturday) and try your luck at becoming a member of the Irish Naval Service.

Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 27. No special educational qualification is required to join the Irish Naval Service.

They are recruiting 200 naval personnel through this special walk-in recruitment. The role will be based at the Naval Base in Cork.

Prospective sailors can sign up at a pop up recruitment centre on the naval service vessel LÉ Róisín at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin Docklands. There will be interview and psychometric tests.

The announcement was made by Minister for Defence Simon Coveney, who boarded the LÉ George Bernard Shaw for a day-long patrol down the East coast. Speaking at the Naval Base in Cork, Minister Coveney said the Defence Forces are short about 1,000 personnel. The 700 Naval Service members who signed service agreements in 1994 will retire in December 2022. These vacancies will also have to be filled.

The Minister said a new agreement was being considered with the Department of Public Expenditure to provide better pay and service benefits to Naval Service members.

Mr. Coveney acknowledged that the pay and working conditions of the sailors were an issue that needed to be addressed. He added that the defense forces could not be separated from the current public service negotiations.

He said the scheme to retain staff in the Air Corps was very successful. “My focus is to look forward, not look back and that is why we have a commission on the defence forces and looking at this full time and look for an accurate and informed report at the end of the year,” Coveney added.
