Job Vacancy Levels Remain Unchanged in Ireland

Dublin: Job vacancies in Ireland have remained stable for the second consecutive quarter, marking the first time in two years that there has been no significant change, according to the Job Index report published by recruitment platform Irish Jobs.

The report indicates that there were no notable new vacancies across all 19 sectors of the domestic economy, including catering, skilled trades, health, and retail. Similarly, vacancies in export sectors such as manufacturing and technology have also declined.

One notable trend highlighted in the report is the decrease in work-from-home vacancies. These saw a 23% drop in the second quarter of the year, now accounting for 2.2% of total vacancies, down from 3.3% in the third quarter of 2023. Despite this decline, the report views the current level of work-from-home opportunities as an achievement.

Additionally, the report notes that the level of quarterly vacancies has not decreased for eight consecutive quarters. Sam Dooley, Country Director of Stepstone Group Ireland, which oversees Irish Jobs, interprets this as a sign of volatility in the labour market. He anticipates a more stable vacancy rate in the coming months.

Dooley also emphasised that domestically oriented sectors have surpassed international trade sectors like manufacturing and science in terms of job vacancies, highlighting a critical shift in the job market.
