Labour Department Raids Target Illegal Employment Across Ireland
Dublin: The Department of Labour has intensified nationwide inspections to identify individuals working illegally in Ireland, with operations concentrated in Dublin and other major cities. Hotels, restaurants, fast-food outlets, and ethnic eateries were among the primary locations targeted.
The raids focused on individuals who had overstayed visas, students working beyond their permitted hours, and, in some cases, those using forged documents. Officials noted that while inspections were triggered in part by complaints that asylum seekers without work permits were being employed, the majority of those apprehended were migrants who had initially entered Ireland legally but later faced difficulties renewing their permits.
Authorities also highlighted the existence of informal networks assisting asylum seekers in securing employment before work permits are granted, often at below-market wages. This practice, officials said, places additional pressure on economic migrants and students competing for the same jobs.
Those found in violation are subject to detailed questioning, immigration checks, and, where visa approval cannot be confirmed, detention and deportation. Employers who knowingly engage illegal workers face severe penalties, including fines and possible revocation of business licences.
The food service industry, particularly businesses employing workers from Asian and African countries, has been identified as a sector where such violations are more prevalent.
A spokesperson for the Department of Labour stressed that raids will continue, with strict enforcement of Irish employment and immigration laws, and warned that both workers and employers will be held accountable for illegal employment practices.
