Limerick’s International Rugby Experience to Close Permanently by Christmas, Deemed a “Particularly Sad” Loss by City’s Mayor

Dublin: The closure of the International Rugby Experience in Limerick has been described as “particularly sad” by Mayor John Moran, who called the €30 million investment from the JP McManus Charitable Foundation an “act of supreme generosity.” Located in Limerick’s city centre, this six-story interactive museum, opened in May 2022, aimed to attract 100,000 visitors annually but saw only 60,000, making continued operations unsustainable.

Despite the foundation’s additional €1.2 million for maintenance and efforts to transfer the building to Limerick City and County Council for civic use, financial and operational constraints ultimately led to the decision to close by December 23. The Council expressed disappointment, noting they explored all options but could not secure the necessary funding to make the museum a permanent fixture.

The International Rugby Experience thanked rugby legends Keith Wood and Paul O’Connell, the staff, and the Limerick community for their support.
