Major Power Outage Disrupts Daily Life Across Iberian Peninsula
Madrid: Efforts are ongoing to fully restore electricity across Spain, Portugal, and parts of France following a large-scale power outage that disrupted the daily lives of millions. The outage, which began suddenly on Saturday afternoon, caused significant interruptions to transport, healthcare, and communication systems across the region.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking after an emergency government meeting, stated that while power has been partially restored in northern and southern regions of Spain—with assistance from France and Morocco—the exact cause of the outage remains unknown. He appealed for public cooperation and urged citizens to rely only on verified information as the government continues to manage the crisis.
“All hydroelectric power plants are now operational, and we are focusing on restoring power to residential areas,” Sánchez announced in a televised address. Despite the severity of the situation, he confirmed that hospitals have maintained essential operations through generator backup and that no major incidents were reported at ports or airports. However, air travel across Spain has been reduced by 20% to prioritise safety.
Severe Disruption to Transport and Daily Life
The outage brought major disruptions to Spain’s transport infrastructure. Intercity train services were suspended for several hours, and in Madrid, the lack of functioning traffic lights led to widespread traffic jams. Police officers were deployed to manage intersections and assist in evacuations, including at major buildings such as the Torre Emperador skyscraper.
Similar scenes were reported in Portugal, where national grid operator REN indicated it may take up to a week to fully stabilise the power grid. REN attributed the incident to a rare meteorological event known as “induced atmospheric vibration”, caused by extreme temperature fluctuations. These atmospheric disturbances led to oscillations in high-voltage power lines, which triggered synchronisation failures across the European electricity grid.
Nuclear Plants Shut Down as Precaution
Spain’s Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) confirmed that four reactors at three nuclear power plants were automatically shut down as a safety measure during the blackout. The shutdowns were part of built-in protocols designed to prevent accidents during unexpected power failures. The plants continue to function safely using diesel generators. Two additional plants were already offline for maintenance prior to the incident.
Impact Beyond the Iberian Peninsula
The blackout’s effects rippled across Europe, with several flights from Dublin Airport to Spain and Portugal cancelled or delayed. Airport operator DAA advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling, as the disruption affected flight schedules throughout the region.
The Madrid Open tennis tournament was also temporarily suspended after the outage caused scoreboard and camera failures. Affected players, including 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov and British player Jacob Fearnley, were forced to leave the court mid-match.
Ongoing Investigation and International Response
The European Commission announced that it is working closely with Spanish and Portuguese authorities, as well as the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), to investigate the cause and scope of the outage.
In Madrid, Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida urged residents to stay indoors and limit travel until the situation is resolved. Many residents reported difficulty contacting schools or emergency services due to mobile network disruptions, further compounding the public anxiety.
Airport operator AENA confirmed delays at multiple airports across Spain. Meanwhile, Portugal’s airport operator ANA reported that emergency generators are maintaining essential services at key airports including Faro and Porto, while operations at Lisbon Airport continue with restrictions. So far, the Azores and Madeira have not been affected.
