Man Who Made Thousands of Hoax Emergency Calls Remanded in Custody

Dublin: A Dublin man who made thousands of hoax phone calls to emergency services while under the influence of alcohol has been remanded in custody by Dublin District Court. Judge Brian Smith presided over the case and scheduled it for further hearing next week.

William Green, 48, a disabled man from Dublin, was accused of making 10,000 phone calls to the emergency number 999, wasting approximately 130 hours of operators’ time. The court heard that Green was charged with causing a nuisance, inconvenience, and unnecessary anxiety to others without reasonable cause.

Detective Garda Jeremy Gibbons informed the court that Green had repeatedly made calls to the Emergency Call Answering Services (ECAS) between April 8 and November 9, 2023. The accused did not dispute making the calls.

Green’s lawyer stated that his client suffers from mental illness and is currently receiving treatment. The Director of Public Prosecutions has allowed the case to proceed in the District Court.
