Martin Says He Will Vote for Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys in Presidential Election
Dublin: Prime Minister and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has announced that he will cast his vote for Fine Gael’s presidential candidate, Heather Humphreys, in the upcoming October 24 election. His statement has sparked speculation about potential cross-party support for the Fine Gael nominee following the withdrawal of Fianna Fáil’s candidate, Jim Gavin.
Speaking during a visit to Mill Street in Cork, Martin said his decision was a personal choice, emphasising that he would not issue any voting instructions to Fianna Fáil members.
“Heather Humphreys represents a strong pro-European and pro-enterprise perspective, which aligns closely with my own views,” Martin said. “In contrast, I believe Catherine Connolly’s stance is entirely anti-European.”
Martin, who described himself as a committed supporter of the European Union, added that this may be the first time he has voted for a Fine Gael candidate.
Addressing speculation that the presidential election could serve as a referendum on the government’s performance, Martin dismissed the idea outright.
“This is not a referendum on the government,” he said. “Voters will choose the person they believe can best represent the country as president. People are clearly distinguishing between a presidential election and a general election.”
Martin also noted that some political figures were attempting to frame the contest as a judgement on the coalition’s leadership, calling it a “false political preconception.”
His remarks mark a rare instance of public support across party lines and highlight the shifting dynamics in Ireland’s presidential race following Jim Gavin’s unexpected withdrawal.
