More Indian candidates may appear in local elections in Ireland

Dublin: Anticipated Surge of Indian Candidates in Ireland’s Local Council Elections for June.

There are emerging signs of a growing influx of Indian candidates gearing up for the local council elections in Ireland, set to take place in June next year. This surge in interest is directly attributed to the substantial influence the Indian community wields in several wards within the municipal areas, offering a promising prospect of success for aspiring candidates.

Notably, Councillors Baby Perepadan, representing Tallaght in South Dublin, and Poonam Rane, representing Blanchards Town within the Fingal Council, have actively thrown their hats into the electoral ring once more, running as candidates for Fine Gael. Additionally, Brito Perepadan has officially declared his candidature for the Tallaght ward, further underscoring the heightened participation and representation of the Indian community in these upcoming elections.

The Green Party Sees Increased Participation of Indian-Origin Candidates in Irish Local Elections

The Green Party is witnessing a notable rise in Indian-origin candidates entering the political fray for the upcoming local elections in Ireland. Among the prominent contenders are Fijil Jose, vying for the Phibs Borough seat in the Dublin City Council, and Jitin Ram, owner of the Sheela Palace restaurant, who is seeking a seat in Lucan within the South Dublin area. This surge of interest within the Green Party suggests a growing engagement of the Indian community in Irish local politics.

Furthermore, South Dublin, an area densely populated by immigrants, is witnessing a considerable number of independent candidates stepping into the electoral arena. Notably, Roy Kunchilakatt, the chief coordinator of Kerala House, is running for office from the Lucan ward, which includes Adamstown, with the backing of the Lucan Club. The Lucan Club is also lending support to Jayan Thomas, a candidate in Palmerstown Ward.

On a separate note, Thomas Joseph has successfully secured the Labour Party nomination for the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council. Several other political parties are reportedly considering Indian candidates as potential additions to their candidate rosters for the Dún Laoghaire Council.

As of now, the candidate selection conventions of various political parties are still in progress, indicating the evolving landscape of diversity and inclusion in local Irish politics.

Growing Roster of Independent Candidates Set to Contest Dublin, Fingal, South Dublin, and Dún Laoghaire Councils

An increasing number of independent candidates have now officially declared their intentions to vie for seats in the local councils of Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin, and Dún Laoghaire. This burgeoning participation of independent candidates reflects a dynamic shift in the political landscape, with a diverse array of individuals seeking to serve their communities.

Additionally, the left-wing cultural group Kranthi is considering the possibility of announcing candidates to run for various council seats, further contributing to the political diversity and choices available to voters.

Notably, a substantial contingent of Indian candidates is expected to participate in local elections across the country. Among them, Raju Thundathill is set to contend for a seat on the Limerick Council in the Munster region, while Dr. Lekha Menon Margasheri is preparing to enter the race for a seat on the Cork Council.

To facilitate the engagement of aspiring candidates and those interested in understanding the democratic systems and electoral processes in Ireland, the New Citizens Initiative in Dublin is organising a seminar in the second week of November. This seminar will feature the insights of experts and provide detailed information to guide individuals interested in pursuing a role in electoral politics. For inquiries and participation in the seminar, interested individuals may reach out via WhatsApp message at 0894529101.
