Mother of Murdered Junior Doctor Accuses West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of Suppressing Protests and Kolkata Police of Inadequate Investigation

The mother of a 31-year-old junior doctor, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly suppressing protests against the crime and for inadequate police investigations. She claimed that despite assurances of swift arrests, only one suspect has been apprehended and expressed doubts about the thoroughness of the investigation. The Kolkata police have faced allegations of attempting to close the case quickly and not properly cooperating with the victim’s family.

On August 13, the Kolkata High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the police, has been arrested in connection with the crime, which has sparked nationwide protests and demands for safer working conditions for doctors.

The victim’s mother reported that the hospital initially misinformed the family about her daughter’s condition, first suggesting she had died by suicide. When they arrived, the body showed signs of severe trauma.

Protests have disrupted traffic in Kolkata, including an aborted Durand Cup football match. Police were deployed around Salt Lake Stadium to manage crowds, while protests continued despite efforts to disperse them. Medical professionals and actors have also participated in rallies demanding justice.
