“Nearly 8,900 Children Await Assessment Under the Disability Act: New Figures Reveal”

New data reveals that nearly 8,900 children are awaiting assessment of need under the Disability Act, with almost 7,000 waiting for over three months. The HSE attributes this surge to a High Court ruling in March 2022, which deemed their assessment approach insufficient. While €11 million has been allocated to address the backlog, Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane argues that the government’s attempts to expedite assessments led to the record waitlists.

Minister Anne Rabbitte acknowledges the issue, citing plans to utilise private sector resources and bolster public capacity to tackle the backlog, alongside ongoing recruitment drives. She emphasizes the importance of meeting statutory timelines and assures efforts to support affected families.
