NMBI approves RCSI Aptitude Test for foreign psychiatric nurses coming to Ireland
Dublin: The RCSI aptitude test for foreign nurses seeking psychiatric (mental health) employment in Ireland has been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Any candidate who has a Psychiatric Division Decision Letter is eligible to write this aptitude test.
What, and How to Prepare for RCSI’s FNM Aptitude Test for Foreign Psychiatric Nurses
Currently, to be employed as a psychiatric nurse in Ireland, overseas registration requires passing the RCSI’s FNM Aptitude Test.
The priority of the NMBI is to protect patients and the general public. The test will determine whether applicants who register with NMBI can meet these requirements. Both parts of the examination will take place at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin’s Smurfit Building.

To write the test…
In order to apply for the test, one must have an up-to-date NMBI decision letter. If the applicant has a decision letter that does not record the RCSI Aptitude Test, the subsequent e-mail received in this regard from NMBI should also be uploaded with the application.
Exam Structure
The test is divided into two parts.
Part One: Theory/Knowledge Test/Multiple Choice Questions. Only if this is successful can the second part be written.
Part Two: Practical/OSCE Examination
Both parts of the test will be based on NMBI standards and nurse registration education programme requirements. The test will test your potential and suitability for registration as a psychiatric nurse.
Two chances each.
Each section of the test will be given two chances.
The theory test will have to be repeated completely a second time. In practise, however, it is sufficient to try only the part that failed the first time. Preparation will take two weeks.
