Nurse Lucy Letby will spend the rest of her life behind bars for murdering seven babies

Lucy Letby, a nurse, will spend the rest of her life in prison for killing seven newborn infants, a court determined on Monday. Letby is Britain’s most prolific serial child murderer of modern times.

Letby, 33, murdered five newborn boys and two baby girls at the Countess of Chester hospital in northern England over a 13-month period beginning in 2015, injecting the children with insulin or air or force-feeding them milk.

Some of those she targeted were twins; in one case, she murdered both siblings; in another, she murdered two of three triplets; and in two others, she murdered one twin but failed to kill the other.

“This was a cruel, calculated, and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children,” said James Goss, the judge who sentenced her to life in jail with no chance of release.

“There was a deep malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions… You have no regrets. There are no mitigating circumstances… “You will spend the rest of your life in prison,” he declared as the infants’ parents sobbed in court.

Whole-life sentences are extremely unusual, and only three women in Britain have ever gotten one, including serial murderers Myra Hindley and Rosemary West.

Police have identified no motive for her acts, and Goss claims that only Letby knew why she did it.

She refused to leave the cells to hear her punishment, sparking calls for offenders to be compelled to hear the consequences of their acts on their victims or their families.

One of the victims’ mother characterised it as a final act of wickedness.
