Orange Weather Alert Issued Ahead of Storm Darragh

Dublin: An orange weather alert has been issued for seven counties as Storm Darragh approaches, with conditions expected to worsen beyond initial forecasts. The alert, in place since Friday night, escalates from a prior yellow warning and is accompanied by heavy rainfall and high winds.

Weather Warnings in Effect

The UK Met Office, which named Storm Darragh, forecasts that the storm will bring severe weather to both Ireland and the UK. An orange alert is in effect from 10:00 PM Friday to 9:00 AM Saturday, specifically for Wicklow, Wexford, and Waterford. A yellow weather warning covers all counties nationwide.

Expected Impacts

The storm is predicted to move eastward from the Atlantic, posing risks such as:

  • Fallen trees and branches
  • Power outages due to downed lines
  • High waves and coastal damage
  • Structural damage to buildings

The public is urged to exercise caution while travelling.

Safety Guidance

Roads and Driving:

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has issued several safety tips:

Drive at reduced speeds and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Be alert for road obstructions and avoid flooded areas. Allow additional space for cyclists and motorcyclists.

Coastal Areas:

The Irish Coast Guard advises people to stay away from coastal regions and seek higher ground if necessary.

Power Lines:

The ESB has warned of potential hazards from downed power lines and cables. Anyone spotting damaged lines is advised to report incidents immediately by calling 1800 372 999 and to maintain a safe distance.

Keith Leonard, National Director of the Fire and Emergency Management Directorate, has emphasised the storm’s potential dangers:

  • Falling trees, flying debris, and localised flooding are likely.
  • Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists should be particularly cautious.
  • Avoid driving on flooded or debris-covered roads under any circumstances.

With Storm Darragh set to bring hazardous conditions, authorities are urging the public to stay informed and prioritise safety.
