Over 4,000 vehicles were reported stolen in Ireland last year : Gardaí Figures

As per the most recent garda records, over 4,000 vehicles were reported stolen in Ireland last year, a 52 percent increase over the previous year.

Car thefts were also up when compared to pre-pandemic levels, with 2022 being 17% higher than 2019.

Sergeant Mark Bolger of the Garda National Crime Prevention Unit told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the numbers are being driven by the theft of second-hand imported vehicles outside the European market owing to a lack of security measures linked with such cars.

“Many do not have a fully-fitted alarm system or immobiliser,” he claimed, leaving them open to hot wiring. “If a key is in the ignition, it has proved feasible to pick up a signal from the key fob from within a home where it’s parked,” he said, adding that access to the ignition system may be acquired without the need of a key. “It’s really easy without the immobiliser feature,” he remarked.

According to Sgt. Bolger, car purchasers and owners may take steps to reduce the chance of their vehicle being stolen.

“It is recommend car purchasers and owners to confirm the security features of imported vehicles, particularly if there is an in-built immobiliser, and consider additional security options.”

Sgt. Bolger also recommended purchasing excellent equipment with high security standards, claiming that the entire cost of these products will be less than the expenditures involved with having a car stolen.
