Parent’s Leave and Benefit Extended to Nine Weeks, Effective Today

Dublin: Effective today, Parent’s Leave and Parent’s Benefit have been extended from seven to nine weeks as part of Budget 2024. Parents can claim the additional two weeks’ leave if their child is under two years old or if an adopted child has been with the family for less than two years.

Parent’s Leave is available to both employees and the self-employed. Parent’s Benefit, which pays €274 per week, can be claimed by those on Parent’s Leave with sufficient social insurance (PRSI) contributions. Employers are not required to pay workers on Parent’s Leave, although some may supplement the Parent’s Benefit.

Parent’s Leave differs from Parental Leave, which allows parents to take up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave to care for their children since September 1, 2020.

Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman highlighted the importance and success of the policy, citing high take-up rates. He noted that mothers receive six months of maternity leave, nine weeks of Parent’s Leave, and 16 weeks of unpaid Parental Leave, while fathers get two weeks of paternity leave and nine weeks of paid Parent’s Leave.
